Recession Schmo-cession!

My sister held a "Recessionista" party on Thursday that was the highlight of my month! "What is a Recessionista Party", you say? It is when all your friends get together and bring all the clothes and housewares they don't want/use anymore and everyone switches or buys it for a great deal! Who can afford to go on a shopping spree these days? Not me! This is such a great idea for all you ladies out there who are looking for a great way to get some new threads and just be with all your lady friends! And...it is a spectacular thing when you can be a Fashionista Recessionista!

Can't forget to eat some good grub to go with all the new garb!

The ladies are shopping it up! Also, included were children's clothes!

This is just one example of what most people's baskets looked like after just a few minutes of rummaging! You know what they say: "One person's trash is another person's treasure!"

It was a huge success and who doesn't need a night out with the ladies, shopping, and eating!

There were tables set up to display people's items, but as you can see, there was so much stuff that there was an overflow on the floor!

This is what every room looked like - Full of clothes and endless possibilities for a new look!

War Wounds

No one gets a scar from just standing there doing absolutely nothing! Behind every good scar there is a good story! Wounds heal and the pain goes away, but the scars are what remain! Whenever we look in the mirror, our flawed bodies are a simple reminder that we did something, someday that put ourselves in danger, somehow. They may be marks of bravery, of defeat and possibly even stupidity, but they belong to us and we should wear our scars proud! Here are a few of my stories!

********

**2 for the price of 1!**
I see my stretch mark in my side and think of my sweet baby boy and how hard it was to carry him and the pain, sickness and suffering it took to get him here. I think of how uncomfortable I was and how I thought my skin was going to rip open because it just couldn't possibly stretch anymore to accommodate the living being inside. I think about how my back ached, the acid reflux and varicose veins. I think about his face the first time he was put into my arms and how all those thoughts went away. I love it!
Then I see the wound of all wounds. I was biking the Wasatch Crest trail and had rode 17 miles of various terrain (much of it uphill) and how exhausted I was. I remember the last few miles were downhill and being glad for that. I remember wanting to hurry to the bottom of the canyon to get more water. I remember hitting an exposed tree root in my path at 25 miles per hour. I don't remember flying 15 feet through the air and landing on my hip bone then sliding another 15 feet. I do remember not being able to breath for quite some time and then when I was finally able, I cried my eyes out. I also remember thinking "Dammit. this is going to leave a scar."

I was only 6 years old. We were living in a small red house in Billings, Montana. I loved to roller skate! I watched the older girls do it and all the fancy tricks they knew. Backwards, spins and even a criss-cross-of-the-legs motion! My mom would take us to the local skating rink on the weekends so we could test our skills and the hold on our feathered hair. This was no weekend. They had just paved the street in front of our house using the "tar and gravel" method. There remained little pebbles everywhere, covering our sidewalks. It was dark and I was unaware. Rock gets stuck under the wheel and a little girl hits the ground. My mom tries to clean out my knee with tweezers and hydrogen peroxide gently telling me to calm down. My sister is standing over me telling me that with a wound like that I will never be able to be Miss America. I am devastated!

The crease in my eye is deeper than it should be. It was my senior year in high school. I only had 2 required classes which resulted in 4 elective classes.
 elective classes = easy breezy
I was taking "Single Survival" which taught us how to accurately perform a new sport/activity each week. BB gun shooting was a blast! We were fortunate enough to have a lake by the high school in which we had rowing lessons. I thoroughly enjoyed flag football and badminton but NEVER in my wildest dreams did I think Ping Pong would be the reason for bloodshed. We were split up into partners. My partner served the ball to me and I missed resulting in the ball rolling through the gymnasium. "I'll get it!" I said, as I started running after it. I saw Mike Lutey getting into his game and just as I ran by he went for a major backswing. His paddle sliced my eyelid open and the blow to my head was so strong it knocked me to the ground and my world went black. I thought I was blind. With my one good eye I could see a pool of blood surrounding my head. My mom rushes to the school and it was the first time I openly swore in front of her. 3 stitches and a black eye for 2 weeks. Worst part is, I had a crush on Mike.

(doesn't show well in picture - it's the white line running vertical down the top portion of my thumb)
I was working at a floral shop downtown. We had a wedding the next morning where the brides family spent over $100,000.00 on flowers alone. For some reason, the owners (idiots!) and all the other employees left work at the regular time even though there was still so much work to be done. My coworker Jamie and I were pretty much forced to take action even though it wasn't in the job description. We knew it was going to be a late night. It was 2 people doing work that required 10. I kept looking at the clock and racing it. $500 worth of rose petals had to be picked off the stems so that we could have them strewn over the sidewalks of Stein Eriksen and 25 centerpieces needed to be made. I took a bundle of the roses and placed them under the chopping blade to be trimmed for arrangements. In such a hurry, I brought the blade down too quickly and it cut through my thumb. It was 9:00 p.m. I was rushed to the ER, given 3 stitches and back at the shop an hour later. The owners were notified of the mishap and met us there. They asked me if I was o.k. and then got in their car while having the audacity to tell us to make sure we cleaned out all the buckets and put fresh water in them for the morning. Then they left because they said they were tired. Jamie and I called our husbands to come help since we were nowhere near done. It was 12:30 a.m. when we finally locked up. My thumb was numb do to a severed nerve and was throbbing. It had it's own heartbeat! The next day I was back at work sprinkling thousands of yellow rose petals over the sidewalks of Stein Eriksen. It was a windy day and I happily watched $500 blow off the sidewalks in a frenzy to a far distance by the woods.

Fun Finds

It has been awhile since I blogged last. Let's face it, winter isn't exactly the season of lively activity in our household! Little E was sick for over a week and I have the winter blues so we were cooped up indoors for too long and cabin fever was setting in! With all the time we are spending indoors, I was able to see firsthand just how curious my child's mind is and I was entertained by the unexpected discoveries that Little E had placed throughout the house!

I don't generally feed him while I put my makeup on, but he just might be onto something here! It's all about multitasking!

We have a thief in the making. He was trying to pick the lock on my mom's desk. I didn't bother telling him that it was already unlocked and that his efforts were in vain.

The Sesame Street song comes to mind: "One of these things is doing his own thing, one of things does not belong!"

Yes, it's true. We have the ever so rare lady windows at our house.

Finger puppets in my Chucks.

He gave a whole new meaning to the term "throw" pillow!

Good Getaway!

This past weekend we had the opportunity to go on a little getaway with some friends to St. George. I always look forward to running away from reality for awhile, even if it's in the same state! Our friend's have a beautiful vacation home there so we were able to take a trip not only on a budget but in style, with good company as well - which is always a treat! We had such a great time! In spite of the constant downpour of rain and gloomy skies, it felt good to just lay around the house, watch the kids play nicely with one another, eat REALLY good food and just get to know each other better! It was a fun weekend and we are so appreciative of our friends for inviting us and allowing us to enjoy the weekend with them!

The second night we were there, we had to call 911 because all the CO2 detectors went off! We even changed all the batteries, but they still kept going off. They came and tested the house and could not find a problem. They stopped beeping after awhile and luckily, we were all able to wake up in the morning!

No, it's not cold outside. Wes and Ian went to Wal-Mart and bought air-soft guns. They played in the rain all night and pelted each other in the 10 layers of clothing they put on to protect themselves! Wes still has welts all over his legs! It was like watching children play and it made me smile!

On the last day that we were there, my friend Jodie and I drove around to do some discovering of the town and we did a little shopping. Hitting Thomas Judd's was one of the highlights of the trip! I found and bought candy that I had not seen or tasted since I was a little girl! Candy cigarettes with a Sarsaparilla anyone?

Later that night we all went out to dinner at TwentyFive Main. SO good! Just walking into the place gave me goosebumps! Amy Butler upholstered seats, empty frames on the wall and CUPCAKES! This is a must stop for anyone looking for a nice place to eat and be treated to some great atmosphere! The prices are great..about $6-8 a plate is all!

If Amy Butler and Black Chandelier had a baby, this is what it would look like. Pure lovely!

Emerson doesn't get much kid time since we live in a "mature" neighborhood, so he was thrilled to be with Isaac, Luke and Megan all weekend!

The clan just before packing up and leaving back to SLC. Ian did not get the memo for all adults to wear black on this day!
Nevermind Wes' shoes...it's a long story!

The ride home was a NIGHTMARE! We hit a storm right out of Cedar City that added a good 2.5 hours onto our trip. This does not make happy babies! We searched high and low for all McDonald's with an indoor Playland or "petrie dish" as we would like to call them! After a few nuggets, farts and chocolate milk, Little E was ready to hit the road again! Life of a baby ain't easy! We will miss the warmer temps of the southern end of our state, but it felt good to get home...safely! E. now has a nasty cold that I will go ahead and chalk up crawling around in colorful plastic tubes and curly slides.

Optical Illusion?

If you look at this and think that it is a photo of some beautiful waterfront property, you are sorely mistaken! Wes took this picture yesterday from high up on the point of the mountain. This is our inversion! Under this disgusting brown layer of filth, is a thriving city of over 1 million people! Can you believe this? We are off to St. George for the next few days and I am very much looking forward to blue skies and clean air! And when we come back, this better not be what I see!! Yuck-O!

Happy Birthday Mommy!

Best wishes on your special day, now blow out your candles and wish away!
May your birthday bring you as much happiness as you give those who know you. You are beautiful in every way and you show that through all you do and say - how thankful I am to be blessed with a wonderful mother! You are my joy, my sunshine and my best friend! I love you, I love you, I love you!

On Thin Ice

Yesterday I did something that I have been wanting to do for a very long time. I went ICE SKATING! My friend April and I got together and the 2 of us ventured out and participated in this amazing sport! How did ice skating even get invented? What crazy person thought to attach a butter knife to the bottom of their shoe and slide across a frozen piece of water? Well, whomever it was, I would like to pat them on the back and thank them for providing us with a day of entertainment!

A little uneasy at first! I had to go very slow!

These things are huge and by no means comfortable. Such an awkward feeling!

April was so much more graceful than I was. She didn't fall once! She even showed me a few pointers. I was glad to learn even the basics.

This is how you turn and make it look good.

I'm up and moving on the ice, that's all I can ask for!

Look at me getting more daring!
(Just after this I crashed hard onto the ice. I am feeling the effects of it today.)

Thank you April for coming with me! We had such a good time!
